Located in northeast Alberta, Fort McMurray is a beautiful area surrounded by boreal forests. It has played a significant role in the development of the petroleum industry and while it isn’t commonly referred to as being a vacation hotspot, there are numerous fun activities in the area that are great for the entire family. Whether you’re looking to get outside and explore nature, learn about the history of Fort McMurray and the surrounding area, or explore the town itself, there is no shortage of great things to do that will keep your whole family entertained.

Tour the Fort McMurray Heritage Village

Fort McMurray has played an important role in trade and transportation dating as far back as the late 18th century. If you’re looking to learn more about the history of the area, then it is definitely worth your while to visit the Heritage Village. Take a walk through history while visiting an old trapper’s cabin, schoolhouse, and more! They even have a 74-foot barge on display as well, highlighting that Fort McMurray played as a transportation hub along the Athabasca River. The shipyard contains several historic vessels, as well as two train cars and a number of artifacts. This is a great place to visit with the whole family while immersing yourself in the rich history of Fort McMurray.

Visit the Wood Buffalo Viewing Point & Bison Sanctuary

If you’re looking to take in some more unique wildlife while visiting Fort McMurray, then you should definitely check out the Syncrude Wood Bison Viewpoint. The project allows visitors to enjoy the natural landscape and catch a glimpse of the large bison that graze in the area. Since the project started, Syncrude has reclaimed thousands of hectares of land and in 1993, introduced a herd of 30 Wood Bison to the area. Since then, the bison herd has grown to more than 300 animals. Visiting the viewpoint and sanctuary is a great way to experience these magnificent animals that once roamed the land freely.

Vista Ridge All-Seasons Park

For a great afternoon of family fun, the Vista Ridge All-Seasons Park is definitely an activity to check out. There are numerous activities to enjoy, from an aerial park with heights that range from 10 feet to almost 40 feet, to a skate park, to a playground. The park also boasts a mini-putt course and frisbee golf. You’ll want to make sure you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy all of the great activities that the park has to offer. Enjoy beautiful views of the Clearwater River while you play and enjoy a picnic lunch in the park.
